About Mel

For starters, my name is Melanee.  But you can call me Mel.  I started Made by Mel because I am passionate about helping people live their best possible lives. This is me!

I've been working in the Fitness Industry for 12 years. When I was in college, I worked as a Group Fitness Instructor in our rec center and spent my summers working at a weight loss camp in upstate New York.  At camp, I figured out what I wanted to do with my life.  I wanted to help people take control of their lives, health, and happiness through fitness. The campers that I worked with and the friends that I made are some of the most impactful relationships I've ever cultivated.

I moved to Houston in 2010 to accept a job as the Fitness Director at a University. I didn’t know anyone here when I moved and quickly got into running to fill my weekends, make friends, and help counteract the not-so-amazing effects of our fantastic food culture.  I ran 7 half-marathons, one full marathon, and a triathlon before developing a chronic knee injury and needing to take a break.  Here's me running!

Well, it turns out I’m not very good at resting. In 2013 I prepared for and competed in my first bikini body building competition, a hobby I kept up for 3 years.  I made changes to my body that I never would have thought were possible.  This is when I really started to understand the impact that diet has on health and physique.

Since I have stopped competing, my body has returned to its natural “set point.”  I’ve come to realize that clean-eating and meal-prep need to be a part of my life forever.  My ability to fully live my life depends on it.  I am not naturally thin or fit.  I work for it every day.

Over the years, I have been amazed at how many people struggle to eat healthfully.  Most people that I talk to struggle with

  1. finding the time to cook,
  2. knowing how to cook, or
  3. understanding what food is “healthy”

Through competing in bodybuilding, I learned so much about food and became so adept at meal-prep. I am extremely excited and grateful for the chance to put what I’ve learned to use in order to help others (like you!) make eating easy, healthful, and accessible. Last but not least, I would be remiss if I didn't give credit to my amazing partner.  He is the reason I had the courage to start Made by Mel, has given me encouragement along every step of the way, and always steps in to help when things get hectic in the kitchen!  I truly couldn't do this without him!
